New year holidays are usually used as the time to travel out of town or abroad with your loved ones. However, as we are now still living amidst the pandemic, the year-end vacation must undergo several changes. Although there’s a high chance that you will stay at home during the new year celebration, it doesn’t mean that you’ll be unable to do fun activities.
There are a lot of movies that you can watch with your family during the upcoming year-end holidays. Starting from animated movies to musicals, everything is available for you to enjoy. Check several recommendations below! Don’t worry, these movies are also safe for children.
Mulan (1998/2020)
First premiered in 1998 as an animated movie, Mulan was adapted into a live action version in 2020. Both of these versions can be enjoyed via online streaming service Disney+ Hotstar. Inspired by the legendary Chinese hero, Hua Mulan, the movies produced by Walt Disney Pictures told the story of a strong female warrior named Mulan.
When the Empire of China was attacked by the Huns from the North, the Emperor commanded every family to send one man to join the army and fight the war. The only man in Mulan’s family was her old father who was unable to walk without a walking stick. Due to the love of a daughter to her father, Mulan took her father’s position to fight the war by pretending to be a male warrior. The movies are full of moral messages about female emancipation and the importance of honesty.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020)
This film tells the life of Ma Rainey (Viola Davis), an African-American musician who first became successful as a professional blues singer. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom plays out the struggle of Ma Rainey in achieving her own success. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is also the last project of the late Chadwick Boseman who played Levee in this movie. You can watch the movie this holiday on streaming service Netflix.
Soul (2020)
For those who miss Pixar animated movies, you can watch Soul at Disney+ Hotstar platform. The main character of this movie is Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a music teacher and a jazz pianist. He had long dreamed of playing jazz on stage. The opportunity came when Joe was offered a spot to play at a jazz club. Unfortunately, an accident made his soul detached from his body. Joe tried hard to get back on Earth before his body stopped working and pronounced dead.
About Time (2013)
About Time is a drama romantic comedy movie with a hint of fantasy that tells the story of a man named Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) who had the ability to travel back in time. With the help of this unusual power, Tim tried hard to make his dream girl, Mary (Rachel McAdams), fall in love with him.
After getting the girl, Tim had to accept that his ability had several side effects that could separate Tim from his loved ones. Evidently, turning back the time was not always the best option in Tim’s life, he had to learn how to accept reality and let go of what he couldn’t control. You can watch About Time during the year-end holidays on Netflix.
The Prom (2020)
This original movie from Netflix is filled with renowned Hollywood actors. You can catch Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, James Corden, and Meryl Streep in The Prom that tells the story of Broadway stars who were trying to help a high school student named Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman) in throwing her school’s prom night. As it turned out, the school’s prom night had been cancelled.
As a musical movie, The Prom presents many catchy songs and a moral message to always help people in need, definitely a must-watch for your family during the year-end holiday season.
Over the Moon (2020)
