Electric Cars or Gas Cars: Things to Know Before Buying

Electric cars are on the rise these days. As pollution worsens air quality, many people turn to electric vehicles (EVs). Moreover, the Indonesian government has also introduced discounts or subsidies for EV buyers.

Despite the rising popularity of EVs, the existence of gas cars is still relevant because not all areas have charging stations for EVs. Before you decide between an electric car or a gas car, you can learn the pros and cons of each option to make an informed decision!

Pros of Buying an Electric Car
Gas emission is one of the main benefits of EVs. Generally, gas cars produce around 2.4 kg of CO2 for one liter of fuel, while EVs only produce 1.3 kilograms of CO2 for the same amount. Also, in terms of operational costs, electric cars require less money to recharge compared to gas cars. However, information about this matter is still limited so you may need more learning resources.

The demand for EVs is arguably only ¼ of the total fuel demand of gas cars for the same travel distance. This estimation comes from the following calculation: an EV with 1 kWh of power can travel up to 8.5 km, while 1 liter of gasoline can reach 10 km. In other words, an EV requires about 1.2–1.3 kWh to get into the same travel distance. If 1 kWh of electricity costs IDR 2,500, an EV will need IDR 3,000 to get 1.2 kWh of power. So, an electric car only needs IDR 3,000, and a gas car needs IDR 10,000 to reach 10 km.

Cons of Buying an Electric Car
While EVs are economical in terms of operational costs and produce less waste, they still have some drawbacks. There are only about 5% of electric car owners in Indonesia. Some non-electric car owners said the lack of public EV charging stations (SPKLU) in various regions is why they haven’t bought the car.

In addition, EVs have a long charging period. You’ll need around 5–6 hours if you charge the car at home, while the fastest charging time in SPKLU is 1–2 hours. Besides, electric vehicles are relatively more expensive than gas cars despite the government’s subsidies.

Pros of Buying a Gas Car
There are specific reasons why 95% of Indonesians still use gas cars daily. Firstly, gas cars have existed for a long time, making access to refueling, spare parts, and sales much more effortless than EVs.

Also, gas cars are available in a wide variety of options. That’s why users can choose whether to buy a brand-new unit or a used car. You’re free to adjust your options to your needs, budgets, and the level of comfort you prefer.

Cons of Buying a Gas Car
Gas cars have many drawbacks. They emit more emissions that can worsen the pollution. We have also discussed the operational cost of gas cars, which is more expensive than when you use an EV.

On top of that, gas cars also cost more to maintain because you must take care of many critical spare parts. This maintenance includes regular oil changes, while EVs don’t need it. Another thing that might be important to consider is that the selling price can drop quickly.

One more drawback of gas cars is the sound. They tend to be noisier than EVs due to their engine performance. This factor also affects the car’s acceleration. Generally, electric vehicles have a higher acceleration rate than gas cars.
